DES001 - Kick-off Information
Guidance on Enrollment, Waitlist Procedures, and Course Requirements
Thank you for your interest in DES 001, "Intro to Design."
We understand your eagerness to secure a place in the course, and we appreciate your cooperation in following these guidelines closely. Please note, if your query relates to the information provided here, I may not respond to emails that do not meet the specified requirements due to the high volume of students (almost 350 in system), particularly concerning PTAs (handled by student advisers) or excused absences without the necessary documentation.
ABOUT PTAs AND REGISTRATION.
Professor Housefield and I regret that we cannot offer a guaranteed spot which we know is extremely limited, to all who are interested, and we wish you success in your registration times. NOTE: PTAs are handled by the student advisers and not us. Design Department policy does not provide PTAs prior to the first day of instruction. We advise students with the following:
- Pass 1: waitlist for A01-A06 section that fits your schedule. These sections are open to all majors during Pass 1 (includes Open Registration) and allow for waitlist.
- Pass 2: review the registration options for A01-A14 and register or waitlist for a section with the smallest waitlist. During Pass 2, all sections are open to all students.
- Plan a back up class in case you are not able to get into DES 001 this fall.
- The fee payment deadline is 9/15/24.
A. FINANCIAL AID RECIPIENTS: students must be registered in 12 units before 9/15/24 for financial aid to disburse. Waitlisted units are not included in the 12 units. If you are not registered in 12 units you will be dropped from all registered AND waitlisted courses for non-payment.
B. If you are dropped for non-payment and you are waitlisted, you will be added to the end of the waitlist when you reregister. - Fill out the PTA Interest form to indicate interest for a PTA number. PTAs will be limited to students who risk not graduating on time.

ABOUT FIRST DAY ATTENDANCE
DES 1 has a MANDATORY ATTENDANCE ON THE FIRST DAY OF INSTRUCTION REQUIREMENT. Attendance on the first day instruction is REQUIRED, this includes both lecture (9/26) and discussion sections. Nonattendance will result in an immediate drop from the course.
ABOUT EXCUSED ABSENCES
To request an excused absence, you must provide appropriate documentation attached to your email. Requests without attachments will not be processed. After the class starts, Prof. Vega won't handle any of this documentation and you must contact directly to your TA. Below are the types of documentation accepted for various situations:
Medical: if you are unwell and you seek a medical evaluation from your physician or campus health services, have them provide a note indicating the date you were seen and the date that you may return to classes. Please do not schedule medical or other appointments during lecture or discussion section meeting times.
Medical / COVID: Note that a home test is not acceptable as documentation for an excused absence. Seek medical attention and provide personalized documentation.
Emergency: anyone involved in an emergency situation including an accident should contact campus police immediately.
University-sanctioned meetings including research conferences, field trips, and participants' travels to sports events: your sponsors, leaders, or coaches will give you official documentation to share with your TA. If you have an option to attend a field trip with a campus group, try to schedule it when our lecture or discussion do not meet. However, we recognize that field trips offer valuable educational experiences and encourage you to participate.
Looking forward to seeing you in this new edition of DES001!
Best Regards,
Prof. Katia Vega
